Seb Lester

Unfortunately I missed the talk with Seb Lester, as I was at a placement interview, but made the effort in my own time to look into his work and gather other people notes about the talk.On his website it says; He has created typefaces and type illustrations for some of the world's biggest companies, publications and events, including the likes of Apple, Nike, Intel, The New York Times, The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and JD Salinger's final reissue of The Catcher in the Rye.  Previously a Senior Type Designer at Monotype Imaging for nine years, he developed custom typefaces for clients including British Airways, Waitrose, The Daily Telegraph, H&M and Barclays. His limited edition prints are becoming increasingly popular and collectible and a new-found love of calligraphy has pushed his work in exciting new directions.He's been interviewed by the BBC and The Independent Newspaper about fonts on movie posters and album covers respectively. His work has also been featured in The Guardian, The Times, Creative Review, Grafik, HOW Design, and numerous other publications worldwide.And a summary of other notes from his talk;
  • He loved his BMX and art when he was younger
  • From the age of like 18-19 he wanted to be a painter so he did these really intricate paintings
  • He moved onto letterforms when he was a college he made videos to show off his letterforms
  • He was really into anagrams, so he produced a lot of these in his college years
  • One of the editors of Rolling stone mag really liked one of his letterforms he produced in college and bought it to use throughout a issue of the mag
  • He then went on to work for 'monotype' which he did a lot of corporate typeface for such as;
  • Waitrose
  • Daily Telegraph
  • British Airways
  • H+M
  • He also did retail typefaces such as 'neon sans' which was used for specsavers, he also created 'soho' typeface which was used for loads of stuff like GQ mag
  • He wanted to push his letterforms and typefaces forward so he decided to produce limited edition prints of his typefaces in the shape of quotes and sayings he likes
  • He is now obsessed with calligraphy,he has about 30 sketchbooks just from one year of none stop practise of calligraphy and is still practising today.
