Cupple is an iPhone app used as a timeline between two people in a relationship, it is described as sharing made easy. Designed specifically to create a private sharing place for two people. The app itself is free and rather than using advertising to create revenue it is going to use user purchasable interactive sticker packs.
We had a meeting with the owner and creator of the app where he explained that he was looking for a new themed sticker pack to use in his app. This represents a huge opportunity to have your work seem by hundreds of thousands of users daily. I looked at the packs he already had, and most seemed to be emotion based. He mentioned in the future possible links with other companies offering special offers based on the stickers sent and received by the users.
Some of my first ideas, just hand drawn around the theme of food, I tried use a comical cartoonish style which is similar to the style they already use while still maintaining my own look. I enjoy working with fine liners and markers, altering the stroke size to change the impact of an image.
After hand drawing the first ideas i scanned them, then opened them in illustrator and traced them out, changing the stroke size in accordance with the marker lines I used before hand. I used block colours and tried to stay away from black outlines where I could, to give the images that fun cartoon look. I think these look good and usable, I particularly like that they are different from the usual emotion theme most people seem to have went for.
I then began to look at possible story boards of how the images would move in the app, as in the only meeting with the client, he mentioned that the already existing stickers, where in motion when first placed on the timeline or seem by the receiving user.
In this case I took the pancakes and simply made the butter melt over the top and then seep out from underneath. I wanted to keep the animation simple enough to be seen on a small screen and it would only last a couple of seconds, and would not be annoying and overly long.
In this case I case I used a slightly longer sequence of images, creating a slightly lengthier animation, of ice cream scoops falling into a tub, then getting a flake being covered in sauce then finally the cherry on top. The animations are quite stereotypical and obvious whats going to happen but I think when the app is going to be available to so many people this is the best way for it to be, staying away from anything to personal or quirky.
